It was only a fortnight ago that I mentioned that the European Union was on course to easily beat it's 20% emissions reduction targets. I was urging them, as I always do, to strive for more.
As I said at the time
What is the point of a government if it does not improve people's lives? What is the point of a government that merely stands still instead of striving for better?Unfortunately it would appear that the leaders of the EU don't listen to me. The BBC are reporting that not only are they going to stick with their low and easily beatable targets, but they're also going to allow countries to buy offsets.
So basically, polluting industries throughout the continent can relax. We're not going to make them clean up their act too much. In fact, we're going to applaud ourselves for achieving a completely unambitious target.
I'm sure history won't be applauding.
