Watch Out For Greenwash

As a man, I'm supposed to have a "thing" about wristwatches. I'm supposed to ooh and aah over them in the same way a woman does with shoes or handbags.

But I don't. I just don't get it. I can appreciate that they look half-decent and/or expensive, but I've never had a desire to own a Tag Heuer or a Rolex.

In fact, half the time I wander around with the free Timex I get from the railway on my wrist. It tells me the time, and that's all I need it for.

(Incidentally, a few years ago we all got fancy "atomic" watches that took it's time signal from an atomic clock...in Germany. You had to be within 800km of Frankfurt or your watch didn't work, which was okay for those employees in the south of England. Not so good for those of us north of Hadrian's Wall).

According to the BBC last week, around 14% of people say they have no need for a watch. With a mobile phone in every pocket, a quick glance at the screen makes wearing something on your wrist rather redundant.

Which all leads me to say that I certainly won't be shelling out $120 for one of these:

They're made from wood, and the company who makes them, wewood, promises to plant a tree for every watch bought.

Or, y'know, here's an idea: just don't chop down the tree to make the watch in the first place.
