£8 Billion To Save The World

The Scottish Government reckons that trying to meet our climate targets will cost the country £8 billion.

That's four new Forth Road Bridges! (Actually, the way public works are done in this country, that's probably only two new Forth Road Bridges.)

I had two immediate thoughts when I first heard the figure.

The first thought was, that's actually a fairly small amount in the overall scheme of things. £8 billion over 10 years is exceedingly do-able.

I would also dispute the figure somewhat.
£8 billion may be the cost, but what will the savings be? How much will councils actually save by reducing energy in their buildings, by using electric vehicles, by changing their working practices?

The second thought I had was this: how much will it cost us not to combat climate change? How much will we eventually pay out if we just blunder on as we're doing, without adapting, without seeing the big picture?

And I don't just mean in monetary terms.

Hi,

I think this is exactly right. The same government published a paper just last week saying there were tens of thousands of jobs for Scotland in renewables. Which will contribute much more than £8bn.

Simply this is a little bit like me saying it costs £2.40 a day for me to work, because that's my bus fare. It ignores the benefits available from this sort of development.
