Create A New EU Mess

I have to admit that I don't often take much notice of online adverts, and in the 15 or so years I've been on the internet I can probably count on the fingers of one hand how many times I've clicked on one.

It really has to capture my attention to get me to act - and so it proved with one last night which asked me to "Create the new EU Organic Logo"

Well firstly, the title is a bit of a misnomer. The design phase is already over, and 100 submissions have been whittled down to just three. What the EU wants you to do is vote on which of those three you would like to see implemented across the EU this summer.

There's two ways of looking at this whole process.

The first is the optimistic view, that this will standardise a logo and certification across the continent and then everyone knows where they stand - when they see the logo then they can be sure the goods are Organic.

The second view is the pessimistic one - that this is bureaucracy gone mad, that the logo is only voluntary, that it can be added to air-freighted goods from outside the EU.

And what of other organic logos? Will the new EU one sit alongside the Soil Association logo, taking up valuable space on the label? Will food producers now bother to get certified with the Soil Association when they can just stick the EU logo on their product?

Is the EU just creating a giant mess where none existed before?

I guess the answers to some of those questions will come in time, but for the moment you can look at the three designs in the shortlist and wonder just how bad the standard of the other 97 were in order to get rejected!

For the record, I voted for No.2, joining 88,000 other European citizens who had already voted. The poll is open until the end of January
