They've finally started the clean-up of the seabed around Dounreay nuclear plant. I say "finally", since radioactive particles have been washing up on local beaches since the early 1980's!
A remote underwater vehicle is being used to map the hotspots in the area (reckoned to be around 7,500) and dig out the radioactive particles. Originally, bosses wanted to use divers!
Well, what do you expect from a company which hosts a
Santa's Grotto for local kids in some low-level waste containers, loses
enough uranium to build 12 nuclear bombs, and allows workers to
contaminate their homes with radioactive particles stuck to their
clothing?
Oh, and wants to turn the plant into a hotel.
